Mystery Plant

Today while walking the dog my mom and I passed by the Bloomfield Township Public Library, and noticed a beautiful, sprawling shrub covered over and over in elegantly drooping clusters of purple pea flowers.

The shrub as a whole

A branch full of flower clusters

A close-up of the flowers

Does anybody happen to know what plant this is?

  2. My first guess is Lespedeza thunbergii -- it's that time of year.

  3. Looks like Lespedeza thunbergii. A gorgeous, tough, easy-to-grow plant that is mysteriously rare in gardens.

  4. some form of Lespedeza, probably L thunbergii. huge sprawling thing but who can resist all that color this time of year? there's fancy versions out there too: http://plantlust.com/plants/lespedeza-thunbergii-gibraltar/

  5. Thank you everyone! Everybody seems to be in agreement, so I guess it is safe to say that it is Lespedeza thunbergii.
